| Samenvatting | The cosmopolitan nature of Alcedo atthis is also implicit in a series of books, including 504 Air Mail, 1408 Air Mail, 448 Luftpost, 1008 Per Luchtpost and Correo Aereo 864 that Waanders made in 1997 around the theme of airmail. Each of Waanders' stamps depicts a kingfisher, or an aspect of its anatomy, along with the legend "airmail" in English, German, Dutch, or Spanish etc. In 1997, Alec Finlay's Morning Star press published Correo Aereo, a small sampler of these and similar rubberstamped designs. Like the postage stamp's symbolic status as the "seal of a boundless world", Waanders' small airmail stamps are the germinal points of departure for aerial reveries and daydreams. These small prints imply the kind of freedom often projected into birds. |
