SamenvattingIn numerous books, the sorry details of Britain’s defeat in the Malayan campaign of World War II have been debated. Singapore 1941-1942 (first published as Singapore: The Japanese Version in Australia in 1960) tells the other side of the story, and describes how Malaya was conquered — in ten weeks, all according to timetable. Both as a work of military history — the author, Colonel Tsuji, was the strategist who helped to plan the campaign — and as a narrative of personal experience, the book, written with great authority and candour, compels attention. It is also exceptionally fair to both sides, thus illustrating the truth of the author’s comment that ‘there is no difference in human nature between one’s own side and the enemy side’.
