SamenvattingThe life of William Shakespeare is only tangibly linked to the history of London. According to Catharine Arnold, both the great playwright and the great city came of age around the beginning of the 17th century. In her book, Arnold introduces us to James Burbage, the founder of the original theatre in Shoreditch, who in 1559 carried out the construction of the Globe Theatre without timber. She describes the night in 1613 when the theatre caught fire during a performance of Henry VIII, how it was rebuilt as a monument to Shakespeare, how it was closed by Oliver Cromwell's Puritans in 1642—and rebuilt three centuries later as Shakespeare's Globe.
