| Samenvatting | Brief life sketches of nineteen Hindustani musicians. Includes 23 photos. The Book: Today, Indian music has earned a place of pride in the global musical heritage. Hindustani classical music and its vocal stream were important influences in creating the wider Indian musical tradition. Music is a performing art, living in performance. These performances are obviously realized through the enactment of ideas and their exploration by the artists involved. Identifying performance ideas provides the prime approach to the qualitative forces in any artist's work. Dr. Ranade has attempted to identify and analyze 19 key performance ideas as they were accessible to him in mehfils, recordings, or teaching sessions. Four other musicians are also briefly discussed. These musicians—and, of course, others not discussed here—have illuminated the 20th century, that is, our immediate and adjacent past. Hence the particular contemporary quality of their work.
