SamenvattingShe was an unusual woman, and she became the most important publicist in the Federal Republic of Germany: Marion Countess Dönhoff (1909–2002), both an aristocrat and a citizen. As the longtime editor of the weekly newspaper 'Die Zeit,' she made history; as a chronicler of the expulsion from her East Prussian homeland, she became a bestselling author; as an advocate for the reconciliation of East and West, she set moral standards: for politics, for society, for the coexistence of nations in a united Europe. When she died in March 2002, Helmut Schmidt called her a 'pioneering fellow citizen' in his obituary. Why she was capable of all these achievements and what drove her, who her friends and companions were, what kind of person this quietly energetic and seemingly modest Prussian woman was – Klaus Harpprecht describes all this in this first critical biography. He was the first biographer to examine all of Marion Dönhoff's private and official correspondence and records, and he also evaluated the "Zeit" archive and the Dönhoff family archive. This brought many important lines of development, many previously unknown elements and facets of the life of the countess and citizen into focus. For the first time, she entered the public consciousness as a person with all her human traits.
