As the longtime editor of the weekly newspaper 'Die Zeit,' she made history; as a chronicler of the expulsion from her East Prussian homeland, she became a bestselling author; as an advocate for the reconciliation of East and West, she set moral standards: for politics, for society, for the coexistence of nations in a united Europe. When she died in March 2002, Helmut Schmidt called her a 'pioneering fellow citizen' in his obituary.
