| Samenvatting | Elias Canetti's The Saved Tongue tells the "story of a youth" and is the first volume of his autobiography, which he continued with The Torch in the Ear and The Game of Eyes, creating a unique panorama of the beginning of the 20th century. Canetti spent his early childhood in the small, almost oriental-looking Bulgarian town of Rustchuk, in the ghetto of the Spanish Jews. His first school years were tied to the merchant milieu of Manchester; he experienced the outbreak of the First World War in imperial Vienna, and the war and postwar years in peaceful Zurich. The "story of a youth" ends with the family's move from Zurich to Frankfurt. Canetti recounts a happy childhood filled with love and jealousy, egoism, pride, tenderness, and fear of death, and, last but not least, the cultural interest of a home where the mother, in particular, pointed the child's way into literature from an early age. |
