| Samenvatting | Curiosity, the thirst for adventure, and knowledge are the original driving force behind photojournalism. It is often also about uncovering neglected or deliberately hidden facts that are to be documented for a wider public. Although it has since been declared dead, photojournalism has lost none of its importance and necessity; quite the opposite: In a world almost universally manipulated by the media, the work of photojournalists is becoming increasingly demanding. The reflection of reality through the photographic medium opens up numerous different areas of interpretation and thus influences the individual, non-preconceived understanding of culture, social conditions, and wars. The Euro Press Photo Award was established with this in mind in 1993 and presented in Paris. Since then, the documentary has taken place in almost all major European cities and honors the most outstanding participants in the categories of "Features," "News," "Sports," and "Travel." This volume also provides a review of the prize winners from 1993 to 2001. |
