SamenvattingSince the mid-nineteenth century, artists, scientists, and photographers have taken advantage of the possibilities offered by the technical image to convey the fascination of infinite ice. Refusing to be discouraged by the inhospitable terrain or the still unwieldy and complicated equipment, they have produced panorama pictures that attempt to expand the view well beyond the human field of vision. In evocative stereo pictures they have conveyed a sense of the astonishingly varied plasticity und radiant crystalline surface of glacial formations, while their photographic series provided evidence that the layers of ice are shrinking. Not only did they succeed in documenting the last "blank spots" on Earth in this manner, in addition the exotic and incomparable phenomena shown in their pictures of glacial and polar regions as well as the stories of those who conquered them also captured the imagination of their contemporaries. By adopting a deliberately critical approach to the iconography of the world of ice, present-day artists like Darren Almond, Olafur Eliasson, and Walter Niedermayr have enabled us to view the historical works with new eyes.
