SamenvattingIt is difficult to imagine today that the artistic value of color photography was still controversial well into the 1980s. William Eggleston s pioneering exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art,New York, in 1976, generated much scorn and confusion, as spectators struggled to accept his rather ordinary-looking color pictures depicting Southern life as art. Early photographs by Stephen Shore, Helen Levitt, Joel Meyerowitz, and others received similarly ambivalent reviews. But as color processes improved and diverse approaches to the color art photograph were explored, the floodgates could not be closed. Inspired by the previous generation of color pioneers, Jeff Wall, Rineke Dijkstra, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Nan Goldin and many others concentrated in succeeding years on exploring color photography s potential as both a medium of great objectivity and artifice, capable of lending a critical eye to the banal, ephemeral, and seemingly insignificant. Starburst examines the first great practitioners of artistic color photography in the United States within the culture of the 1970s and looks at their influence on subsequent generations. Grounded in reviews of sources from the decade, Starburst presents the breadth of this important chapter in the history of photography, offering a stimulating and often surprising array of unique works.
