SamenvattingJohns Hopkins U. Press takes a large lead among the scholarly publishers of railroadiana with this large-format (10x13<">) collection of expertly reproduced engravings. Harter gives most attention to the railroads of the U. S. and Britain but includes Europe, Russia, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The rapidly developing technology is the subject of most of the 360 pages of plates (many with two or more engravings). After 245 pages on the world's rails are chapters on stations, freight service, signaling, construction, maintenance of way, cog & rack, hazards & accidents, horse cars and steam powered street railways, electric and other traction systems, and monorails. While this is predominantly an illustrated book, each section opens with a concise background text. The book itself is as fine as the content: handsome book cloth, pasted illustration on the cover, Smythe sewn binding of fine, heavy paper. This work will be in wide demand for decades to come.
